Texas Plan To Give People $9,000 Stopped by Supreme Court

Texas Plan To Give People $9,000 Stopped by Supreme Court

A program designed to provide financial aid to struggling families in Houston has encountered a major setback.

The Harris County Uplift initiative aimed to distribute $500 per month for 18 months to nearly 2,000 low-income families in high-poverty areas.

These funds were intended to help alleviate poverty, reduce income instability, and support housing security.

But the Texas Supreme Court has temporarily blocked the program due to legal concerns about its constitutionality.

The court’s decision comes in response to a lawsuit filed by the state, raising questions about whether the program violates the Texas Constitution’s restrictions on public fund usage.

Harris County officials plan to continue defending the program, emphasizing the critical need for this support among the county’s impoverished residents.
